Jasper Launches U17 Men’s Season at Ipswich

Report by Julie Hollis

Despite very cold conditions and a depleted team due to other commitments, the U17 men had a great start to the season, finishing 2nd in their category, and helping the club finish 2nd place overall.

First event was the Polevault, which saw Thomas Ashton jump 3.10m, finishing 2nd, which is a great start to the season. Next came the100m Hurdles, with Marcus Stansbury crossing the line in third place, with a respectable time of 22.5. This was a great effort by both Thomas and Marcus, considering the horrible weather conditions they had to put up with during their events.

On the track, Jacob Haynes and Louis Jackson were covering the sprints, both 100m and 200m with two first place finishes for Jacob and two second place finishes for Louis . More success came in the 400m, where Ollie Ayres ran 54.6, to finish in first place, with Marcus coming third in the B string race. Well done to all.

Tom O’Reilly, Joe Chamberlain and Sam Burnell made up the middle distance group. Tom ran the 800m, finishing in 2nd place, and Joe and Sam both ran 1500m with Joe coming 4th in the A string and Sam in 2nd place in the B string.

In the field events, both Thomas and Tom took part in the High jump, both finishing at a height of 1.50 and securing more points for second place in both A and B string.

The Points kept coming in Long jump, with Ollie in 3rd place and James Fenwick securing 2nd place in the B string competition. Ollie also did Triple Jump, along with Marcus, with both boys securing more valuable points.

Jasper Smith, who made his debut for Dacorum and Tring on Sunday, threw Javelin, along with James. Jasper threw an amazing 53.85m and finished first, earning him athlete of the match, with James achieving 2nd place in B.

Finally, the 4x100m relay was run by Jacob, Louis, Marcus and Ollie. The boys had all just finished other events and ran with weary legs, but were rewarded with a second place finish.

Huge thanks to all of the athletes who took part, and to the parents for their support.
